Biotech Applied Research (BAR)
Venture Overview
Biotech Applied Research (BAR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit operating a wood-to-carbon processing model that converts underutilized biomass into high-value biochar—improving soil health and water quality, sequestering carbon, and creating skilled green-collar jobs in rural communities. By pairing deployable biochar production with workforce development, BAR transforms environmental liabilities (inactive citrus groves and storm-damaged wood waste) into scalable ecological and economic opportunities. Founder Zack Farr, a third-generation citrus grower, launched BAR in response to declining citrus productivity and shrinking rural economic resilience, building cross-sector partnerships that align restoration with durable market value.
